A rise in ‘staycations‘ in the U.K. due to the COVID-19 pandemic means Brits are holidaying much closer to home nowadays. But holidaying in the U.K. doesn’t mean you need to compromise on adventure, scenery, or sea views. (Unfortunately you may have to compromise on weather, but this AirBnb is worth it. I promise). This unique glamping in Scotland experience should certainly be on your Scotland bucketlist!

Nestled away in woodland in Orbost, this cosy cabin is the perfect base to reconnect with nature whilst exploring everything the Isle of Skye has to offer.

Glamping (glamorous camping) is a mixture of traditional camping and more the more plush amenties you get in hotels. Think campfires and shared bathroom facilities, but with a wooden, insulated hut instead of a tent. It’s also perfect if you’re curious about dipping your toes into the world of camping.

Location – Orbost, the Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye is unquestionably one of the most beautiful and magical places I’ve ever visited. So magical, in fact, that what started out as a 3 day Scotland staycation, ended up being a 7 day roadtrip. Skye is home to some of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes and breathtakingly beautiful attractions.

If you’re a film fanatic, there are numerous famous filming locations around Skye. Or if you prefer scenic, waterfall walks, The Fairy Pools may be more your fancy.

“Orbost is a stunning, secluded community in the North West of the Isle of Skye and makes the perfect base to explore all that this beautiful island has to offer from film location landscapes to historic and prehistoric attractions. The glampsite is regularly visited by a variety of wildlife from Golden Eagle and Sea Eagle to Roe deer and foxes as well as being patrolled by our friendly flock of free range hens.”

We all know that some down time away from screens is undeniably good for our mental health. Cutting down on our screen time can significantly improve our quality of sleep, increase our ability to focus, and can also help to reduce our stress levels. In reality, this can be difficult to achieve with the technology pressures of modern life. Skye Eco Bells provides an environment where the temptation to check your phone vanishes. Not because there is no electricity to charge it, but because (I hope) you will relish the opportunity to completely disconnect from technology, and instead reconnect with nature.

Unsurprisingly, the site is built upon an ethos of low impact living and sustainability. With this in mind, the shared toilets are composting. Skye Eco Bells suggest that you “…forget the stereotype of the stinky compost toilet!! Think clean and fragrant and well stocked with reading material!“. I can vouch for this.

“The site has no electricity or WiFi so you can really disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with the important things… each other and the stunning natural landscape around you. Lighting is provided by rechargeable lights and candle power.

Where else should I visit?

The Isle of Skye is without doubt home to some of the most stunning scenery in the U.K. If you’re lucky enough that you don’t need to return home straight away, why not continue your Scotland roadtrip?

With Fort William only a 3 hour drive away, you could even schedule in a hike up Ben Nevis, Scotland’s iconic mountain. Obviously there are less strenuous activities, such as visiting Loch Ness, which is only 30 minutes from Fort William.

How about staying on your own private island? This AirBnb off the coast of Campbeltown offers you the chance to explore lush surroundings and observe Scottish wildlife. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a long drive.
